Questions & answers:
Q. I get a black screen. The av cables are connected to the correct yellow white and red connections on the tv but nothing is showing, sound or picture.
Always ensure that the Sega Mega Drive II console is powered off before inserting any accessories, controllers and game cartridges.
Ensure that the RCA Connectors are connected to the matching Red, White and Yellow AV RCA Sockets on the TV. A Yellow RCA denotes a Composite Video input. A Red, Green and Blue RCA connector typically denotes RGB Component input. RGB Component video inputs will not work with a standard, unmodified Sega Mega Drive II.
Ensure that that the TV is SET to AV. Some televisions have multiple AV ports. These are often labelled as AV1, AV2 and AV3. Make sure your TV is switched to the correct AV input. This can be checked with a known good image source such as another known good game console.
Testing on a second TV can ensure that any issues are not caused solely by a particular model of TV.
Test the Sega Mega Drive II power supply with a known good power supply. Does the Sega Mega Drive II’s RED light come on? If not then check the power supply. If you can test with a Multi Meter, the Power Supply should have an output voltage 10VDC and be able to supply at least 850 milliamps.
If you feel adventurous, carefully inspect the DC socket on the Sega Mega Drive II. A common issue is that the DC sockets wear out or the solder connections weaken and disconnect due to frequent movement of the DC plug.
Test the console with a known good cartridge.
Clean both sides of the game cartridge edge connectors. This may help to ensure that the cartridge is connecting with the console when inserted. We have a cartridge edge cleaning tool and game cart screwdrivers for this. See our listings for IPA cloths and thin plastic cards to clean the game consoles Cartridge Slot.
